2011 Escapade - $45
Columbia Valley
Escapade is a wine that ventures off the conventional winemaking path. The heart and soul of this wine are two southern Rhone varietals, Mourvèdre (57%) and Syrah (34%) joined by two non-traditional Rhone blending grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Malbec (4%). One of Washington’s top boutique wineries specializing Bordeaux blends continues to be this 2,000-case operation in Woodinville with Shane Howard at the helm. This leads with Merlot, and the nose is alluring with hints of black cherry, plum, chocolate-covered pomegranate, black pepper and vanilla bean. That theme of dark fruits plies its way to the palate with pleasing density from chocolaty tannins. Blackberries and molasses carry through to the lengthy and balanced finish. It earned a gold medal at the 2014 Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Competition.

Blended using all five classic Bordeaux varietals Cab Sauv. (59%) leads the juicy quintet, with Merlot (17%), Cab Franc (12%), Malbec (7%) and Petit Verdot (5%) doing their parts adding depth, color and complexity. Dark ruby color with rich purple hues lure you in. The nose is rich with ripe dark berries and cassis. A judicious use of oak provides a warm toastiness to the wine without ever overpowering the more subtle notes of vanilla, cocoa, spices and minerals. The finish is long and elegant and there is an oppulance that keeps the CONSENSIO from being anything other than delicious and user friendly!
